president obama and speaker boehner met privately yesterday. nbc news first read team makes this point. if the plan is to get something passed by friday, december 21, right before the christmas holiday, then the legislation has to be written by december 18th and that means that obama and boehner must reach a deal by december 14th, 15th if there is going to be a deal. so the time for posturing and pr is over. a new political poll shows that likely voters support the president's tax increase on the upper brackets. 60% favor raising taxes on households that earn more than $250,000. 64% favor raising tacks on large corporations. 33 oppose. the poll asked likely voters, do you believe that if we raise taxes on households that earn over $250,000 per year, it will have a negative impact on the economy. 38% said yes. 58% got it right and said no. today president obama outlined the deficit reduction legislation he would sign into law. >> what you need is a package that keeps taxes where they are for middle class families, we make some stuff spending cut

speaker boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy american jobs. the heritage foundation skewered the boehner counteroffer on its blog. at first blush, it appears little more than categorical preemptive capitulation. to be fair, the details of the republican proposal are extraordinarily vague to the extent it can be interpreted from the hazy details that it is utterly unacceptable. president obama said today there is a time and a place to discuss reforming the tax code. but that time is not now. >> what i've suggested is let's put a down payment on taxes, let's let tax rates on the upper income folks go up. let's let those go up. and then let's set up a process with a time certain at the end of 2013 or the fall of 2013 where we work on tax reform. we look at what loopholes and deductions both democrats and republicans are willing to close. and it is possible that we may be able to lower rates by broadening the base at that point. >> joining me here in washington are congressman tim walls, democrat from minnesota, and karen finney, the former dnc di

john boehner's got to make a decision. is he going to put a majority of members on an agreement, democrats and republicans together, or will he bring nothing to the floor unless he has a majority of republicans? if it's the latter, it's going to be harder to get to a deal. he can take 150 democrats and 75 or 80 or 90 republicans and get a deal more quickly than he can take a majority of his caucus. and that's really his role in leadership, what's he going to do there. i heard you talking about the "lincoln" movie a while ago. that's the kind of leadership speaker boehner will need to show, and i think he eventually will. it's less a fiscal cliff than it is a slide or an incline plane or whatever. but i think that, you know, soon after the 1st, if we haven't done it by then when all the tax rates go and all the changes happen, we get serious and something happens, and i think speaker boehner will be part of it. that's why i'm generally optimistic within the next month if not within the next few weeks. >> i hope so. senator
